Film Opening Research

All these articles ,reviews, film posters and pictures all helped with my research on thriller theme openings. I researched not only film openings but also i watched films in full and noted thier themes and their hybrid genres i also read and looked at article to look at real life stories as i want the film opening to be as realistic as possible.

Analysis of Opening Sequence “Memento”

This film opening is a thriller and it has helped with creating our film opening i looked at the camera shots and movements, music and sound used and how the characters were established. The first thing that came to my attention was the music, the music was mysterious and it set the mood for the opening sequence, this made the video and audio parallel as they both matched each other . 1st shots in the opening sequence are photographs held by someone this gave the audience clues to what may happened or is going to happen in this film Also what I liked  about “Memento” is the film was going backwards as it made me think and left me wondering what happened. The director also used photographs to establish the characters without words by the use of pictures, this is a different and creative way of establishment. Overall I really like the film opening as I thought it was very challenging as I was left wondering and confused as everything was going back in time.

Analysis of Opening Sequence “Falling Down”

This film opening is a thriller and it has helped with creating our film opening i looked at the camera shots and movements, music and sound used and how the characters were established. The director Joel Schumacher used  a lot of extreme close ups this was to build up tension Close ups were used also to show the frustration in the characters’ face to show the audience how the character was feeling. The director also used Pans to establish the surrounding to the audience. The camera shots kept changing at a fast pace this was to show the audience how frustrated the character really was. The music chosen helped build up tension in the scene this also showed how frustrated the character was as the music also sped up and became louder. The sounds used in the opening sequence made the scene more real this made the audience feel like they was sitting in the traffic as well. The character was established by different shots used there was no speech but the shots used made it obvious that this character was going to significant.

Photo Storyboard

Long Shot – Panning across the walls.
This was used to introduce the audience to the setting of the story without giving away too much as they were not being shown the full location. This makes them want to continue watching to find out more about the narrative.

Close up of photo on wall.
By using this as our second shot we are showing the audience two of the main characters breifly. They are unaware of who they are therefore they want to continue watching in order to find out.

Mid Shot – Panning of wall.
This continues showing them 'cliff-hanging' shots of the location without giving away too much. Therefore making them want to continue watching to find out what is happening.

Close up of photo on wall.
Again, giving the audience a very brief introduction to the characters maiking them want to continute watching to find out more.

Close up of hat on floor.
We chose to show a close up of the hat on the floor because in the images we showed of the main character, he was wearing the very same hat. Therefore with the hat unusually lying on the floor will question the audience's minds making them want to continue watching.

Close up of shoe lying on floor.
We chose to use this shot as by showing a single shoe seems slightly odd. This also creates a very strange feeling to the audience as they immediatley start to think of something sinister and perhaps even slightly violent.

Beginning of pan from feet.
We chose to use this as it is the first shot we see of the character in person as we are not revealing him straight away. Therefore there is still mystery to the character keeping the audience intised wanting to watch more.

Close up of phone on floor.
This was just to briefly show that there was a telephone lying on the floor as one of the main characters possessions.

Continuing pan from feet – gradually continuing to face.
This continues to keep mystery to the narrative yet revealing the character a bit more.

Close up of ID card.
On the actual day of filming the ID card will be of the main characters name. By showing this to the audience they are directly told the characters name which is obviously a key role in the narrative. Also, as he is the first character to be introduced it shows key is one of the main characters.

ECU of phone on floor.
In the actual opening of the film the person calling will be called 'Sarah' who is the girfriend of Nicholas'. The audience will not be able to link the name with the face as they will be completley unaware of this however it will contribute towards their understanding of the narrative later on in the film.

Mid shot of feet walking into room.
These will be the feet of Jonathon (the father of the girlfriends). We have chosen not to show his face yet to keep mystery in the narrative and leave the audience who is walking through the room.

Close up birds eye view of picture on floor.
This will be showing a picture of Nicholas on the floor. By the picture being on the floor will show that he is not cared for and perhaps has done something wrong.

Close up birds eye view of foot walking over photo on floor.
Again, this will show that Nicholas is not cared about and is disliked by the person who is clearly stepping over the picture.

Mid shot into long shot looking through mans legs.
This final shot shows authority through the mans legs. The standing character is positioned standing over the main character. This fully shows the character tied up on the floor in a mysterious background, definetly suggesting the main character is in trouble.
